San Francisco City Hall Wedding Guide

Planning a San Francisco City Hall wedding? This iconic location is one of the most beautiful courthouses in the country, making it a favorite for couples from around the world. Shizuka and Matthew’s early morning elopement was a joy to photograph in this elegant, light-filled space. If you’re considering a courthouse wedding, City Hall in San Francisco is a timeless and unforgettable setting.

Why Choose San Francisco City Hall

San Francisco’s City Hall is a popular destination for elopements and intimate weddings. The architecture is grand and romantic, featuring a dramatic staircase, marble columns, and a stunning dome. Whether you’re planning a quiet civil ceremony or a more elaborate celebration, the building offers beautiful backdrops for wedding photography.

If you’re dreaming of a private weekend wedding, City Hall is available for Saturday rentals as well.

Tips for Getting Married at City Hall

City Hall is open for public weddings Monday through Friday. Any day can be busy, but Thursdays and Fridays tend to be the most crowded. If you can, try to schedule your ceremony for a Tuesday or Wednesday for a quieter experience.

The grand staircase is a popular photo spot. I recommend arriving at 8 a.m. when the building opens. This gives us the best chance of getting photos on the staircase without large crowds. If mornings aren’t possible, late afternoons are also a good option.

Be sure to give yourself plenty of time in case we need to wait to access certain areas. I offer several elopement photography packages ranging from 90 minutes to 4 hours, and I’m happy to help you choose the best fit for your plans.

Ceremony Options at City Hall

There are three main types of ceremonies available at City Hall:

  • Civil Ceremonies: Held in the rotunda at the top of the grand staircase. These are quick five-minute ceremonies with up to six guests.
  • Private Balcony Rentals: For couples expecting more guests, consider reserving a space like the Mayor’s Balcony (up to 40 guests) or the Fourth Floor Gallery (up to 60 guests). From a photography perspective, the fourth-floor gallery offers the best lighting.

Each option provides a different atmosphere and level of privacy depending on your vision and guest count.

Advice from a City Hall Bride

“We did our pictures (couple and family photos) before our ceremony, and we were able to get in plenty of great shots. Also, consider daylight saving time. If you’re getting married after daylight savings ends, make sure there’s still enough time for golden hour photos.”
